Modern Coastal Home in Piha, Auckland

Perched on an elevated coastal site overlooking the rugged beauty of Piha, Auckland, this contemporary home has been thoughtfully designed to integrate with its natural surroundings while embracing modern aesthetics and durability. The architecture responds to the west coast environment with a robust yet elegant material palette and a considered approach to siting and form.

Architectural Cladding & Material Palette

The home features a refined combination of dark grey brick and vertical timber cladding — a striking yet harmonious blend that reflects both strength and warmth. The dark brick provides grounding and durability against Piha’s coastal climate, while the warm-toned vertical timber adds texture and softness, evoking the natural hues of the surrounding bush and driftwood. Slim black aluminium joinery frames expansive glazing, offering both durability and contrast against the cladding.

Site-Specific Design

The house is carefully sited on a sloping section, stepping with the land to minimise earthworks and visually anchor the building to the landscape. A series of generous concrete steps lead from the naturalistic landscaping to the entry and outdoor living zones, with a covered deck area that projects lightly over the hillside, capturing stunning views toward the Tasman Sea. Glazed balustrades provide wind protection while maintaining uninterrupted views and a sense of openness.
